Nick Brauns is a member of the Transportation and Business Litigation groups at Higgs Fletcher & Mack. He has successfully litigated cases on behalf of small and large businesses and motor carriers through jury verdict in both San Diego and Los Angeles. Most of his practice involves catastrophic loss and contract claims, and he has significant experience counseling clients with respect to cargo claims, regulatory compliance issues, and driver employment-related issues. Mr. Brauns has assisted transportation clients defending product liability claims, as well as administrative actions brought by state and local administrative agencies.
Mr. Brauns participates in the 24-hour rapid response team at HFM, which offers immediate response to catastrophic loss incidents in San Diego, Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, and San Bernardino Counties.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Brauns worked as a Marine Surveyor and was one of only a handful of North American surveyors certified by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) to inspect bulk cargo vessels for compliance with the Australian government’s stringent bio-security protocols. Mr. Brauns has also represented the interests of shipping conglomerates, such as the American Natural Soda Ash Consortium (ANSAC), and international shipping companies, such as the Canadian Potash Exporters (Canpotex), when shipping valuable bulk cargoes to various ports throughout the world. Mr. Brauns assisted with casualty investigations for domestic insurance companies and became accustomed to analyzing complex maritime issues during the course of litigation. Mr. Brauns has drawn on his extensive maritime background to resolve a variety of cargo-related claims for transportation clients.
Mr. Brauns has been named a Super Lawyers® Rising Star each year since 2015, a distinction that is awarded to less than 3% of attorneys in each state, and is a recipient of San Diego Daily Transcript’s Top Young Attorney Award. He co-authored, “Life After the Excess Verdict: Two Cases Take Very Different Paths” and was a speaker at the Alpha Mini-Transportation Seminar for the Southwestern Region
In his free time, Mr. Brauns stays active by working out, cooking, and spending time with his family.
