SAN DIEGO (December 5, 2022): Higgs Fletcher & Mack (HFM) Partner Susan M. Hack has been named “Defense Lawyer of the Year” by San Diego Defense Lawyers, and she will receive the award at the organization’s 38th Annual Installation Gala on January 21, 2023. The Defense Lawyer of the Year award is presented to one outstanding defense attorney annually in recognition of their success and overall achievements in law.

For over 30 years, Hack’s litigation practice has focused on business disputes, personal injury, premises liability, professional medical and business negligence, and product liability matters. She has received myriad honors throughout her distinguished career, and received the Daniel T. Broderick III Award, which is awarded to one lawyer each year who epitomizes the highest standards of civility, integrity and professionalism.

“San Diego is fortunate to have such a talented, diverse, and collegial defense bar,” said Hack. “It is a true honor to receive  this award.  I am humbled by this incredible recognition from our defense community.”

Hack joined HFM in 1989 after her admittance to the State Bar of California. She became one of the Firm’s partners in 1996, and in 2001, she became a part of the Firm’s management when she was appointed as an Executive Partner.  Ms. Hack is the Chair of HFM’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and the education side of the Firm’s Professional Development Committee. In addition to practicing law, Hack is an adjunct professor at her alma mater, the University of San Diego School of Law.

Her community involvement includes serving as the President of the San Diego Inn of Court.  She is also a former President of the Hon. William B. Enright Chapter of the American Inns of Court and continues to serve on the Inn’s Board of Directors. Hack mentors law students and new lawyers at HFM and through the Lawyers Club of San Diego.  She is a former board member of FAME, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the public education/schools in her family’s residential community in many areas, including technology.
