A lively crowd of more than 70 attendees gathered to mingle with fellow Ethnic Relations & Diversity Committee (ERDC) and San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) members for drinks and appetizers at its annual spring mixer held at the Higgs Fletcher & Mack’s downtown office last week. Melissa Deleon, Chair of the ERDC, welcomed the attendees and stressed the importance of diversity in the legal profession encouraging law firms to take the SDCBA Diversity Pledge. Deleon also thanked John Morrell, Managing Partner of Higgs Fletcher & Mack, for hosting the event and for the firm’s efforts in promoting diversity in the community. Morrell stated that the firm was honored to host the spring mixer for the sixth year in a row and support diversity in the legal community by being an original signatory of the Diversity Pledge and creating diversity scholarships through the University of San Diego and California Western Schools of Law. He also stressed the importance of ensuring diversity within the firm in terms of being able to properly serve the legal and business communities.
The San Diego County Bar Association’s Diversity Initiatives include a Diversity Fellowship Program, the Diversity Pledge, an annual Dialogue on Diversity CLE program as well as networking and educational events with members of the SDCBA’s Ethnic Relations and Diversity Committee. The goal of these various initiatives and programs is to foster a greater commitment to diversity within San Diego’s legal community. The ERDC Committee advocates on behalf of under-represented ethnic and minority attorneys and other traditionally under-represented members of the legal community.
Other groups participating in the event included members from the following organizations: Tom Homann LGBT Law Association, Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association, Filipino American Lawyers of San Diego, Iranian American Bar Association, Korean American Bar Association of San Diego, Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego, San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association, San Diego Chinese Attorneys Association and South Asian Bar Association of San Diego.
