SAN DIEGO – September 23, 2016 – Prominent San Diego litigator Doug Butz and his professional liability and business litigation team will join Higgs Fletcher & Mack, a San Diego-based, full-service law firm for more than 75 years, effective October 3.
Both Butz and the Higgs partners believe that merging their practices will be of significant benefit to their respective and mutual clients.

Mr. Butz, the founder of long time San Diego firm Butz Dunn DeSantis, has been one of the leading professional liability and business litigation lawyers in San Diego for more than 40 years. He has tried in excess of 100 cases in courts of unlimited jurisdiction, successfully defending national and international law firms in complex professional liability actions, international accounting firms in coordinated professional liability class action cases, and public agencies in high value, multi-plaintiff cases involving claims of massive failure of public infrastructure. Mr. Butz’s business litigation experience also includes contractual disputes, real estate litigation, unfair competition and false advertising, trade secret infringement, claims against directors and officers and the defense of lender liability claims. He has been recognized as a Southern California Super Lawyer continuously since 2007, and was recognized as the “San Diego Legal Malpractice Lawyer of the Year” for both 2012 and 2013. Mr. Butz has been listed on the annual “Best Lawyers of America” since 1991, one of a limited number of attorneys recognized as such for more than 20 years. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and has been a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers since 1992. Mr. Butz received his law degree from the University of Southern California School of Law in 1974.
Also joining Higgs Fletcher & Mack are Butz’s two associates and attorney team members, Bradley A. Lebow and Joy Homze. Mr. Lebow has represented regional, national and international law firms in complex professional liability litigation. He has also represented clients in a broad range of commercial litigation matters, including consumer class action defense, business torts and shareholder and partnership disputes. Additionally, Mr. Lebow has experience in healthcare litigation, including payor-provider disputes, insurance bad faith and cases involving ERISA, the Medicare Act and California’s Knox-Keene Act. He received his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 2005.
Ms. Homze has worked for a diverse range of clients, from public entities to sole practitioners, in a variety of practice areas, including business disputes, catastrophic injury, class action litigation and professional liability defense, with a specific emphasis on the counseling and representation of attorneys and law firms. She has extensive experience guiding clients through all stages of litigation, continuously advocating on their behalf before judges, juries, arbitrators, mediators and opposing counsel. Ms. Homze has been a litigator her entire career and routinely advises clients on cost-effective alternatives to litigation and risk management strategies. She received her law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2008.
