Written by:

SAN DIEGO (June 13, 2022): Higgs Fletcher & Mack (HFM) Partner Brian P. Tsu will lead the Estate and Gift Taxes Committee of the Taxation Section of the American Bar Association (ABA) for the following year. His term as Chair begins July 1, 2022. The ABA’s Taxation Section is comprised of more than 14,000 members nationwide. The Estate and Gift Taxes Committee focuses on providing high quality continuing legal education programs to its members across the county on estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax topics. In addition to providing a forum for discussions regarding substantive topics, new developments and drafting practices, the Committee also provides comments and guidance to legislative and administrative bodies on new developments in the law, with sound tax policy in mind.

“Serving as Chair of the Estate and Gift Taxes Committee of the ABA’s Tax Section is a significant honor, and I am excited to work with my peers across the country to carry on the work of the committee in serving the tax/trusts and estates bar and to contribute to the strength of the ABA’s Taxation Section,” said Tsu. “I look forward to leading the committee and all that we will accomplish in the year ahead.”

The official committee chair transition took place at the ABA Tax Section’s meeting in May of 2022, though Tsu will assume the year-long position beginning on July 1, 2022. In his law practice, Tsu represents high-net-worth individuals in the areas of domestic and international estate planning and administration, related areas of taxation, closely-held family business planning, charitable giving, and trust modification, reformation and decanting.

He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Estate and Gift Taxes Committee of the ABA’s Taxation Section and on the California Lawyers Association’s Taxation Section Executive Committee. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (“ACTEC”) and is a Certified Specialist in both (1) Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law and (2) Taxation Law, each by the State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization. In addition, Tsu is a regular speaker and contributing member of the American Bar Association, Tax and Real Property, Trust & Estate Sections; STEP; the State Bar of California, Taxation and Trusts & Estate Sections; the California Society of CPAs; and the San Diego County Bar Association, Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Section.
