Hoover High School Cardinals Interact Club visits Higgs Fletcher & Mack
Each year, HFM hosts Hoover High School’s Cardinals Interact so we can help educate these seniors on what they could expect from going to law school and/or practicing law and 2015 was no exception. Higgs Partner Laura Buckley led the efforts in recently providing a roundtable discussion for seven students and two faculty members of the local high school Interact club at the offices of Higgs Fletcher & Mack. Assisting Ms. Buckley with answering students’ questions and providing insight into what it was like to be an attorney were Higgs lawyers Tom Ferrell, John Rice, and Maggie Schroedter. The students each commented on something they had accomplished in high school and why they wanted to pursue a career in the legal field. The attorneys spoke about their legal background, what it takes to be an attorney, and gave their thoughts about the legal profession. Follow-up questions from the students explored the different roles played by transactional versus litigation attorneys, how to achieve life/work balance, and the challenges women face in being an attorney and a mother.
About Hoover High School Cardinals Interact
The Hoover High School Cardinals Interact is a partnership between Price Charities and San Diego Rotary Club 33 to support a mentoring program for Hoover High School students, grades ten through twelve. There are approximately 150 Hoover High students who participate at any one time in the three year mentoring and tutoring program. The program which is modeled in part on the Aaron Price Fellows Program, includes camps, as well as visits to San Diego businesses, non-profits and government institutions. Students are able to experience a variety of programs along with ongoing one-on-one mentoring and tutoring. The program has been successful at helping many of its participants graduate from high school and attend college. In fact, 95% of the students who graduate the program continue on to college.
